Chinook season to close on Snake River PDF Print E-mail

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today the upcoming closure of the Snake River spring chinook sport fishery. The closure is effective July 2, 2009 at 11:59 PM.

The season for Snake River hatchery fish opened on May 30 from the Dug Bar Boat Ramp to the deadline below Hells Canyon Dam. Fishery managers opened this sport season because the predicted number of hatchery spring chinook returning to the base of Hells Canyon Dam exceeded the number needed for broodstock purposes.

This closure is necessary to resolve confusion caused by non-concurrent regulations between Oregon and Idaho.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced an emergency closure of the spring chinook fishery on the Imnaha River effective at sundown on Sunday, July 5. Biologists recommended the early closure because angler impacts on wild chinook have reached the levels outlined in the Imnaha spring chinook fishery plan.

“Even though anglers have been releasing the wild fish they caught, approximately 10 percent of the wild fish hooked and released eventually die,” said Brad Smith, ODFW fish biologist. “The closure is intended to limit impacts to the wild component to the Imnaha spring chinook run.”

Fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing enthusiasts contributed $2.5 billion to Oregon’s economy in 2008 according to a new study conducted by Travel Oregon and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Residents and nonresidents spent more than $1 billion on trips and $1.5 billion on equipment and activity-related purchases at Oregon-based retailers and suppliers.

Survey results, which are broken out at the region and county level, will benefit businesses dependent on tourism, destination marketing organizations, conservation groups, tourism managers and recreation retailers and suppliers. Armed with the newly compiled economic data, local decision makers will be able to more accurately evaluate the impact of changes in regulations, habitat, invasive species, land use, fish passage and other activities that could affect fish and wildlife recreation. ODFW staff will be able to more accurately identify the potential economic effects of changes in wildlife and habitat management activities.
